Pardon my Southern Accent

Podcast Branding

TIME FRAME

April 2021 - August 2021

PROJECT TYPE

Branding, Concept Development, Illustration

An upcoming podcast hosted by Sparks Magazine, Pardon My Southern Accent, that focuses on sharing the stories and experiences of Asian Americans from the South.

Pardon My Southern Accent is an expansion of Sparks Magazine and its mission to provide a media platform for the API/A community in the South to share their stories and experiences. Based on the theme of Asian Americans in the South, I created the podcast cover art, and established branding that still reflects Sparks Magazine.

Process

Many themes were explored during the initial branstorming phase such as focusing on the idea of speech and conversational imagery, or focusing on the regional aspects of the South. We also decided we wanted a more typography focused cover art that would showcase the podcast logo.

After going through different concepts for the podcast cover art, we decided on a tea theme. One of the most well-known aspects of the South is how often we drink sweet tea and that is something that can be related to Asian Americans as tea is something that we share in our culture as well. In addition, a lot of nice and deep conversations can happen over tea; therefore, drinking tea will be encouraged during the podcast.

Once the concept was decided,  I did 3 different directions with multiple iterations for each.  After presenting to Sparks National Board members, they largely preferred the tea pouring in the center, with dynamic typography on top, and the orange background.
